If your dog can keep sitting in the presence of another dog or a favorite toy then you can move to Step 7.

Raising the Bar

The following is a difficult skill for most wild and crazy dogs to learn, especially if they have always been able to run and jump up on anyone as they approach. However, by mastering the steps above you have built the foundation for your dog to learn this behavior.

Step 7—Reward on approach

When the above distractions become a “piece of cake” for your dog, make it harder by having friends and family members approach him while you keep him sitting with your marker and rewards. You will practice this part on a leash so your dog is unable to move forward to the person if he should get up at any time. It’s important that your dog doesn’t “self reward” by getting up and going to the person. As the helper approaches, mark and reward for each step she takes toward your dog. You will be “telling” your dog that the correct behavior is to Keep Sitting, even if someone is approaching you. If your dog looks like he might get up as someone approaches, say “All done” and have the person back away. Try it again with better treats until you can have your helpers move all the way up to your dog and possibly pet him if that is your goal. If petting is too tough, continue to practice just the approach until your dog concludes, “People approach and I get rewards, but if I get up, the treats and the people stop coming.”
